We are strong believers in getting dogs out and about to see the world. Not only is it great exercise for you and them, it helps them become more confident and well socialised, as well as building the bond between owner & dog. New Zealand can sometimes be unwelcoming to dogs, so it is important to know where you can and cannot take your dog. However once you start looking you may be pleasantly surprised by how many great places you are allowed to explore with your four-legged family member!

1. The Department of Conservation website.
While many DOC walks are off limits to dogs, they do have some where dogs are allowed! Check out this link, and use the filters to find walking tracks. You can search everywhere or just a specific location. On the next screen you can go to the drop down menu marked “other” and choose “dogs allowed” to show the dog friendly places.
2. Council websites.
Most councils should have a list of dog exercise areas on their websites. For Auckland Council, click here. For Waikato District Council, click here. For Hamilton City Council click here. For other councils, google “dog exercise area ____ council” and you should be able to find some sort of list. You could also call into the council offices and ask in person.

3. Bloggers.
Kelly Wolfe Photography (one of our team members) has a blog called “Dog Adventures” where she writes about different places she has gone with her dogs. You can find that here. If you google “Dog Walks NZ” you will be able to find several other dog friendly places to explore!
4. Get out there and explore!
Keep your eyes peeled while walking or driving around, and you may be pleasantly surprised by the cool places you end up! Unless there is a specific “No dogs” sign or statement from council/govenment/businesses, then most publicly owned (council or government) outdoor areas should be ok for dogs on lead. If in doubt, let the signs guide you.
